Renovate Your Life – Useful Lessons I Learned from Home Makeover
1. When Changing Your Space Means Facing Yourself
You’d think a home makeover is mostly about picking out paint colors or scrolling through Pinterest for the perfect shelf.
But here’s what no one tells you: transforming your space often stirs up something deeper.
Mid-renovation, I found myself sitting on the floor, surrounded by chaos, wondering: Why is this so hard?
It wasn’t just about where to put the furniture. It was about who I was becoming — and whether my home still fit that version of me. Home makeover sounds easy, for some it is, for some it is hard.
Because here’s the truth I wish I’d known earlier:
Redesigning your home is also an emotional renovation.
2. A House That Shaped Me: My Personal Journey with Home Makeovers and Self-Growth
Growing up in a historic town surrounded by crumbling beauty, I spent much of my childhood renovating my family’s home. Despite the visible decay, there was always something magical about those old walls — something that made me see potential in what seemed like ruins. It was there, in the grand spaces of that old house, that I first learned how the environment we inhabit affects how we feel, think, and even grow.
As an architect, I’ve always been fascinated by buildings, but over time, my passion shifted from just creating spaces to understanding how they shape the people who live in them. Later, as I left the family house, I travelled a lot and have lived in many country’s countless apartments, flats, houses, fazendas, tents… I was amazed how people in different places use their homes and built environment. How many object they have or don’t have, how they like their home or not – and still living their life as they can.
I’ve become increasingly curious about the connection between our homes and our personal growth. When I started writing the first version of this blog post, the very first post on my blog – I felt the same mix of emotions and challenges I face every day during my work— trying to name the deeper motivations behind my desire to design spaces not just for aesthetic value, but for personal transformation.
For me, home makeovers are never just about the aesthetics. They are a chance to dig deeper into who we are — and who we want to become. And as I continue to explore this connection, I hope to inspire others to create spaces that truly reflect their journey toward self-improvement.
3. The Deeper Challenge – Why is it mentally so hard to make decisions?
When Redesigning Your Home Feels Like Redefining Yourself
It’s Not Just About Furniture
You might think a home makeover is all about choosing the right sofa or paint color. But suddenly, you’re overwhelmed by decisions, questioning your choices, and wondering why this process feels so emotionally taxing.
The Emotional Weight of Home Makeovers
Home transformations often stir deep emotions because our living spaces are extensions of ourselves. Changing them can feel like altering a part of our identity.
Decision Fatigue and Over-Personalization
With countless options available, making choices can become exhausting. This “decision fatigue” can lead to stress and anxiety, making the process more challenging than anticipated.
Fear of Getting It Wrong
The permanence of certain design choices can be paralyzing. The fear of making a mistake can hinder progress and add emotional strain.
Our Spaces Reflect Our Inner World
Research indicates that our environments significantly impact our mental well-being. For instance, incorporating natural elements into interior design can reduce stress and promote wellness. Moreover, the field of interior design psychology explores how our surroundings affect our behavior and emotions. Thoughtful design can enhance mood, productivity, and overall mental health.
Embracing the Journey
Recognizing the emotional aspects of home makeovers allows us to approach the process with compassion. It’s not just about creating a beautiful space, but about crafting an environment that supports and reflects our personal growth.

Try these steps to declutter your mind:
- Donate unused items from your home to feel lighter and more organized.
- Make a “let it go” list – Let go of all those lists and tasks you’ve been dragging around for years but somehow never get around to. Write down things that are weighing on you, then symbolically crumple the list and toss it out.
- Start journaling! My favorite is to write every day a gratitude journal.
Decluttering your brain means giving yourself the mental freedom to focus on what really matters, like your goals and the present moment, instead of being stuck in a loop of regret or overthinking. During this process you may discover things, something you’ve always wanted to do but never had the courage to… Now it is the time you stick it on your fridge and figure out the first step!
4. Self-Awareness is the Solution for Home Makeover
When we understand ourselves, we can design spaces that truly reflect who we are. It’s not just about choosing a trendy color or following the latest design fad. It’s about knowing what works for you and what doesn’t.
Here’s how self-awareness can guide your home makeover:
- What do you need from your space?
- Do you crave calm, or do you want energy?
- Is your space a sanctuary or a place for creativity?
- Do you crave calm, or do you want energy?
- What emotions do you want to feel?
- Peaceful? Inspired? Energized?
- Peaceful? Inspired? Energized?
- How do you want to grow?
- Does your space inspire new habits or challenge old ones?

- What makes you feel at home?
- Comfort, nostalgia, simplicity?

Self-awareness leads to intentional design.
When you align your surroundings with your inner world, your space stops being just a place to live — it becomes a tool for personal growth.
Want to give it a try? Ask yourself these questions before you start your next project:
What would make me feel more “me” here?
How does this space make me feel right now?

5. Interior Design and DIY is a Tool for Growth
Home renovations and home makeovers can be more than just cosmetic changes. They can become a powerful tool for self-discovery and personal growth. By consciously designing spaces that reflect our values, goals, and needs, we can create environments that nurture both our well-being and our transformation.
- Your space can support your growth: Redesigning areas in your home with intention can improve your mindset, help you stay focused, and motivate you toward your goals.
- DIY projects: These aren’t just about physical work; they’re about self-expression and cultivating resilience. Every brushstroke, every decision, is an opportunity to experiment with your evolving self.
Take my Studio Apartment Renovation Diary as an example — it’s more than just a renovation. It’s a journey of learning, how to trust myself. And to give some tips about real life renovations! Check out my transformation process here!
Moreover, designing with intention isn’t limited to just aesthetics. You can use your home as a tool to help you achieve personal goals and strengthen your mindset. I wrote a guide on 7 Strategies for Achieving Your Goals, which you can use to transform your space into a motivating environment. Find out how here.
Lastly, mindful design can also be a key element in overcoming stress and anxiety. It can transform a chaotic room into a peaceful retreat, offering the calm we need in a busy world. I’ve explored this idea in my article on Overcoming Stress and Anxiety Through Mindfulness. Read it here for more insights.
Your space is more than just walls — it’s an opportunity to nurture the best version of yourself.
6. Takeaway: Take a Small Step!
The power to reshape your space is also the power to reshape yourself. Imagine stepping into a room that truly reflects who you are and who you’re becoming. Every choice you make in redesigning your space isn’t just about aesthetics — it’s about creating an environment that inspires growth and empowers you to take the next step in your journey.
Growth, like home improvement, isn’t neat or easy. At some point in both processes, you’ll wonder, ‘Why did I even start this?”. There is bigger mess than before. Suddenly, your living room looks like a DIY explosion, and your thoughts are scattered like random receipts in your wallet. But just like a house that eventually gets its new coat of paint and shiny new shelves, your growth will come together, too. Be patient and trust that the mess is temporary. Trust the process of a self-development and a home makeover! Focus on the vision!
This isn’t just about making things look beautiful — it’s about creating a space that inspires you to grow, to evolve, and to step into the life you’ve always wanted.
Your space can be the foundation for your best self. It’s time to make it happen.
